5 Habits That Are Slowly Killing Me (And You Probably Do Them Too)
It’s not always the big things. Sometimes, it’s the little habits slowly killing me that I’ve ignored for way too long.
This isn’t a lecture. This is me being honest about the things I’ve been doing that are slowly messing with my health, energy, and peace of mind, and I know I’m not the only one.
We think these are harmless. Normal, even. But they add up. Here’s what I’ve caught myself doing:
1. Scrolling First Thing in the Morning
What I tell myself: “Just checking updates.” 😁
What actually happens: 30 minutes to 1 hour gone. Mind overstimulated. I haven’t even stood up, but I’ve already let my phone take over.
It’s not even about comparison, it’s just habit. A habit that steals my quiet before the day begins.
2. Sitting Way Too Long Without Moving
It’s wild how easy it is to stay glued to a screen, watching Netflix, bingeing a series, or clicking through random YouTube videos without even realizing it.
But when I don’t move, my body reminds me, with neck pain, back tightness, and that sluggish, heavy feeling. (Signs of aging? Maybe. 😂)
Either way, our bodies weren’t built to sit all day. They need movement, even just a little.
3. Replacing Meals with Coffee (Oops)
Most of the time, I skip breakfast and eat lunch way too late because “I’m not hungry yet”, or let’s be real, too lazy to wake up early.
Then 3 PM hits, and I’m crashing hard, wondering why I feel dead inside.
Coffee may be life, as they say, but it isn’t food.
My body needs actual fuel, not just caffeine and vibes.
And yep, I’m learning that the hard way.
4. Saying Yes When I Want to Say No
Sometimes I say yes just to avoid the awkwardness. Or the guilt. Or the overthinking that comes with saying no.
Even when I’m tired, drained, or just not in the mood, I still agree to things I don’t really want to do.
And for what? To please people who probably wouldn’t even notice if I backed out.
It’s exhausting.
I’m slowly learning that “no” is a full sentence, and choosing myself isn’t selfish. It’s survival.
5. Sleeping With a Busy Brain
I might be in bed, lights off, eyes closed, but my brain? Wide awake.
Thinking about what I didn’t finish. What I need to do tomorrow. Random convos from three years ago.
It’s like my mind refuses to clock out.
And even if I technically sleep, I wake up feeling like I didn’t.
Real rest isn’t just about hours, it’s about shutting off the noise.
Still working on that part.
What I’m Doing to Stop the Habits Slowly Killing Me
I’m not perfect, far from it. I still catch myself falling into these habits more than I’d like.
But here’s what I’ve realized: these patterns, if I keep ignoring them, don’t just mess with my energy or focus, they affect how I feel, think, move, live.
Now, I try to be more aware. Pause when I catch myself. Choose better, even if it’s just one small thing.
Maybe I put my phone down instead of scrolling in bed.
Maybe I eat something real before grabbing another coffee.
Maybe I finally say “not today” to things that burn me out, and not feel guilty about it.
Some days I nail it. Other days? Not even close.
But I’m trying. And that counts for something.

Undoing These Habits Isn’t Easy, But It’s Possible
The habits that slowly wear us down aren’t always obvious.
They’re the ones we normalize, the quiet routines that sneak in and settle.
And just because they’re common doesn’t mean they’re harmless.
This isn’t about being perfect or super-disciplined.
It’s about noticing the damage before it becomes the default, and reminding ourselves that we deserve better.
So no, I haven’t figured it all out. But I’m unlearning.
Showing up for myself, slowly, quietly, and with more intention than before.
And if you’re trying to do the same?
You’re not alone. I’m with you.

Nice to read 🙂
I can certainly relate, as I’m working hard to promote my blog, while navigating heat flashes and weight gain Of menopause I find it hard to pull myself away from my projects.
Great reminder to watch out for these habits! I definitely am guilty (usually daily) of replacing meals (breakfast!) with coffee!
